Standing Up for Childminding

Overview

Childminding Regulations took effect on 30 September 2024. A three year transition period is now underway.

Childminding Ireland is calling for a meaningful review of the childminding regulatory process in 18 months time so that any obstacles to registration or difficulties with the regulatory process can be identified and corrected before the regulations become mandatory for childminders in September 2027.

The transition period also gives childminders time to observe and adapt before registration with Tusla becomes mandatory.

Quality Care, Enhanced Support

The new childminding regulations will mean greater access for parents to financial supports for childcare costs.

  • Expanded Access to Childcare Subsidies: More parents will be able to benefit from the National Childcare Scheme (NCS), as childminders decide to register with Tusla and if they decide to offer the NCS.  The NCS or other childminding funding mechanisms, yet to be developed, will have to be tailored to be appropriate for childminders to administer.
  • Maintained Home Based Atmosphere: We are working to ensure regulations preserve the home-from-home care you value.
